US Military Strikes on Iran Spark Controversy and Global Tensions
The recent US military strikes on Iran have sparked controversy and raised concerns over insider trading, with reports suggesting that individuals may have profited from the attacks. According to Bloomberg, $529 million was traded on contracts tied to the timing of the strikes on the Polymarket prediction market, with one account, ‘Magamyman’, making over half a million dollars betting on the US attack on Iran.
The allegations of insider trading have led to calls for lawmakers to regulate online betting platforms, known as ‘prediction markets’. The controversy has also raised questions about the involvement of Donald Trump Jr., who sits on Polymarket’s advisory board, and his venture capital firm’s investment in the company.
Global Energy Prices Soar
The conflict has led to a significant increase in global energy prices, with Iran’s continued attacks on oil and gas infrastructure across the Gulf. The Strait of Hormuz, a vital shipping channel, has been declared ‘closed’ by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, with any ships attempting to cross the channel facing the risk of being set on fire.
The closure of the Strait of Hormuz has resulted in the suspension of liquified natural gas production by Qatar’s state-owned fossil fuel company, as well as the halt of oil production in Iraqi Kurdistan and the Tamar gas field in the Mediterranean Sea off Israel’s coast.
Security Concerns and the Supreme Court
The conflict has also raised security concerns, with the Supreme Court increasing security measures to protect the justices. The Court has faced protests and security threats, including an assassination attempt on Justice Brett Kavanaugh, and a security threat that led Justice Clarence Thomas to change a planned in-person appearance at a legal conference to a remote one.
In response to the rising security concerns, Congress passed the Supreme Court Parity Act in June 2022, which extends Supreme Court police protection to the immediate family of the justices and officers of the Court.
US spending and causalities
Two weeks into the war with Iran, the United States has spent more than $10 billion, with the conflict claiming the lives of over 1,000 Iranians and seven American service members. The numbers are likely to grow if there are boots on the ground, a possibility that Trump Administration officials refuse to rule out.
Global Reactions
The conflict has sparked global reactions, with Israel widening its strikes into Lebanon and threatening to invade the southern portion of the country. The Tehran-backed Hezbollah group has been sending missiles into Israel since the attacks on Iran began nearly two weeks ago, with Lebanon appealing to Israel’s allies to stop the campaign.
The world’s attention has also turned to Gaza, where Hamas is regrouping. The conflict has raised concerns about the potential for further escalation and the impact on the region.
