A series of devastating events have shaken the world, from airline disasters in the US to the release of Palestinian activist Leqaa Kordia and escalating war in Sudan. Get the latest updates on these developing stories.

Airline Disasters in the US

A recent collision between an Air Canada Express plane and a fire truck at LaGuardia Airport has resulted in the deaths of two pilots and injured over 40 passengers and crew members. This incident is the latest in a series of airline disasters under President Trump’s second term, including a January 2025 collision near Ronald Reagan National Airport that killed 67 people.

Release of Palestinian Activist Leqaa Kordia

Palestinian activist Leqaa Kordia has been released from a Texas ICE jail after more than a year in custody. Kordia was arrested during the 2024 Gaza solidarity protests at Columbia University on charges that were later dropped. Despite her release, Kordia’s experience in custody was marked by hospitalization following a seizure, and her legs were chained to her bed, with limited access to her lawyer or family.

War in Sudan

The ongoing war in Sudan has resulted in the deaths of at least 64 people, including over a dozen children, in a strike on a hospital in East Darfur. The World Health Organization has condemned the frequent attacks on medical facilities since Sudan’s war broke out nearly three years ago. The director-general of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, has called for an end to the violence, stating that ‘healthcare should never be a target’ and ‘peace is the best medicine’.

Iran’s Retaliatory Strikes

Iran has launched a series of retaliatory strikes against Gulf nations hosting US military bases. Bahrain and Saudi Arabia have intercepted missiles and drones, while drones have targeted a fuel tank at Kuwait International Airport, causing a fire. The New York Times reports that Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, is pushing President Trump to continue the war.

GlobalImplications

The Philippines has declared a national energy emergency due to the US-Israeli war on Iran, disrupting global systems, from agriculture to oil to shipping. The crisis has sparked concerns about the decline of the US Empire, with historian Alfred McCoy stating that the Iran war and Strait of Hormuz energy crisis reveal the decline of US power.
