The Middle East crisis intensifies with rising humanitarian needs, oil price surges, and global economic ramifications, as UN agencies scale up emergency aid amidst mounting logistical and security challenges.

Middle East Crisis Intensifies

The crisis in the Middle East continues to escalate, with ongoing strikes and rising humanitarian needs. The UN nuclear watchdog reported that a projectile struck the site of Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant, although no casualties have been reported.

In Lebanon, the humanitarian situation is worsening, with hundreds reported killed and more than one million people displaced. UN agencies are scaling up emergency assistance despite mounting challenges.

Oil Price Surges

Global oil prices are spiking, driven by the Israeli-US war against Iran. With Iran retaliating by attacking infrastructure and transport hubs and blocking the Strait of Hormuz, oil supplies from the region are being choked, pushing up prices.

The cost of a barrel of Brent crude – the international benchmark for oil prices – stood at US$73 before the conflict but has surged beyond US$100 since. It could go higher still as the war continues.

Humanitarian Toll

The Middle East war could cause the worst disruption to lifesaving humanitarian work since COVID, the UN World Food Programme (WFP) warned. The conflict risks pushing 45 million more people into acute hunger.

Humanitarian needs are growing across Gaza, with the UN agency assisting Palestine refugees (UNRWA) reporting mounting pressures on aid delivery and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Global Economic Ramifications

The economic ramifications of the emergency are still playing out, with the Strait of Hormuz the focus of global attention. The crisis is also having a significant impact on the global economy, with trade ministers gathering in YaoundĂ©, Cameroon, for the WTO’s 14th Ministerial Conference (MC14) on 26–29 March 2026.

The conflict is also affecting other regions, including Somalia, where the war is exacerbating existing humanitarian needs. In Colombia, the situation is also deteriorating, with growing pressures on aid delivery and the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Cybercrime and Law Enforcement

Europol announced that authorities from 23 countries shut down more than 373,000 dark web sites in a coordinated cybercrime operation, continuing multinational pressure on criminal infrastructure used for illicit services and data abuse.

The U.S. Department of Justice said that three men were sentenced for helping North Korean IT workers obtain remote jobs and access U.S. networks through stolen identities, concluding a long-running investigation into sanctions evasion and covert network access.

Policy and International Cooperation

INTERPOL’s Operation Synergia III led to 94 arrests and the takedown of more than 45,000 malicious IP addresses and servers tied to phishing, malware, and ransomware activity across 72 countries and territories.

The United States, Germany, and Canada disrupted four major botnets that had infected more than three million devices, with Europol support and assistance from major technology companies in the coordinated operation.
